Refashioning: CFGNY & Wataru Tominaga
Refashioning presents two project spaces from transdisciplinary artists and fashion designers Concept Foreign Garments New York (CFGNY) and Wataru Tominaga. Featuring garments, accessories, and textile works, the exhibition examines the ways in which these two practices—one based in New York, the other in Tokyo—challenge preconceived notions of gender and identity, and in particular what the artists describe as “vaguely Asian” aesthetics.

Join the Fowler in welcoming artist, historian, and professor of history at the Central European University in Vienna, Khadija von Zinnenburg Carroll, for a program on her newest publication: The Contested Crown: Repatriation Politics between Europe and Mexico (University of Chicago Press).
Carroll meditates on the case of a spectacular feather headdress believed to have belonged to Montezuma, the last emperor of the Aztecs. This crown has long been at the center of political and cultural power struggles, and is one of the most contested museum claims between Europe and the Americas.

Gassia Armenian, curator of Janyak: Armenian Art of Knots and Loops, will discuss the history of Armenian needle lace in the U.S. Janyak (Ժանյակ) or needle lace has been, for centuries, a precious link for Armenians across the world. A portable and enduring art form passed from mother to daughter, it has connected generations both in their homeland and in the diaspora, transmitting cultural heritage and values.
Guatemalan Traditional Dress: Diversity and Evolution
Join Janet Seward collector, photographer and independent scholar as she presents a visual entrée into the use of traditional Guatemalan textiles today and shows changes that have taken place primarily over the last 60 years. There will be a “show and tell” of more than 50 pieces from her personal collection, plus more from the collection of Gwen Beazell.

The Bohannon Lecture Series features Connective Threads – Fiber Art from Southern California co-curator Carrie Burckle. At the Scriba Family Center, Carrie will focus on the techniques and unique expressions of the Textile Art works in the exhibition at the Palos Verdes Art Center.
