Under Pressure is dual exhibition that brings together the sculptural fiber works of Loretta Bozung and the flowing paintings of Emberly Modine to embody the resilience and power found at the intersection of survival and adaptation. Together, they explore the grit required to exist in a changing body and a changing world.
Loretta Bozung creates out of a sense of defiant necessity. Constructed from pounds of yarn and textiles, her sculptures reflect the resilient fragility of the human condition and its capacity to sustain pain, damage, repair, and age. Wrapped, stuffed, and stretched to their absolute limit, these fibrous materials become surrogates for the porous, malleable tissues of the body. Bozung’s sculptures are figures of “spite,” stubbornly standing despite their proximity to failure. These freestanding, multi-pedal forms stumble and teeter—engaging in a vulnerable conversation with gravity that highlights the simultaneous strength and precariousness of the human form.
