Catherine Reinhart and her Collective Mending Sessions is part of the community programming for Color Duets: Color Duets: Kaffe Fassett and Erin Lee Gafill exhibition on display at the Monterey Museum of Art, through Sunday, October 9, 2021.

Virtual sessions will take place on Saturdays, September 4, 11, 18, 25 at 10- 11 am with a in-person session Saturday, October 2 at 10 am.

Other programming includes Make and Mend Sessions with Artist Erin Lee Gafill & Jaki Canterbury

Textile artist Catherine Reinhart cultivates care for cloth and community through slow stitching and quilting. Participants will be led in a quilt restoration project over the course of four virtual sessions followed by one in-person gathering.

Catherine’s Collective Mending Sessions is a series of socially engaged workshops centered around repairing and creating a cooperative piece of fiber art. Expect her to shepherd group-led discussion bolstered by infusions of skill-sharing, poetry, and writing prompts. Reflection on topics from repair culture to work equity to living a creative life — and the intersections between them — will be offered contemplative and actionable space, informed by the central question: “How do we mend our communities?”

In order to foster relationships and discourse, this workshop is limited to 29 people. Prior to the sessions, registrants will be mailed all the supplies required for participation. At the culmination of the sessions, participants are asked to return their finished works to Catherine to be reassembled as part of the series’ whole.

Participants are asked to commit to all five sessions and have basic sewing and/or embroidery skills. Beginning stitchers are encouraged to participate in the Make & Mend series.
