The Art of Fabric Marking and Surface Design

The Art of MARK MAKING on Fabric series: June 22, July 20, August 17, in collaboration with Craft Contemporary

LEARN TO CREATE PATTERN and TEXTURE through the processes of discharge dyeing, ice dyeing and direct hand applications.

Mark-making in surface design allows artists and designers to express their creativity, create unique visual narratives, and infuse surfaces with character, texture, and meaning. The choice of mark-making techniques often depends on the desired aesthetic, the material being worked with, and the intended application or product.

Artist and designer Liz Oliver will guide you through the intricate art of shibori discharge dyeing. Learn to create intricate patterns by binding and clamping fabric before applying discharge paste and dyes. Uncover the magic as you remove the resists to reveal striking negative spaces and designs.

Delve into mark-making processes with Artist Carrie Burckle using fiber reactive dyes. Experiment with a variety of hand tools to create spontaneous marks, textures, and patterns directly on fabric. Carrie will share her expertise in layering colors and manipulating dyes for dynamic and expressive results.

Explore the captivating technique of ice dyeing with artist Tifanie White using fiber reactive dyes in both powder and liquid forms. Learn how to arrange fabric and dyes under ice, allowing the melting process to distribute the colors in wonderfully unpredictable ways. Embrace the element of surprise as each piece transforms into a unique creation.

Discharge Dyeing with Liz Oliver Saturday, June 15, 2024 from 11:00 - 4:00

This workshop will focus on the intricacies of color removal (aka Discharge Dyeing) utilizing a few different Shibori resist techniques. Discharge dyeing can be just as exciting as additive color! The possibilities that Shibori offers are endless, and when you add in the element of color removal, the results can be even more nuanced and unexpected. It can be a good exercise to think in terms of negative space.

All materials are provided for experimenting with the discharge process. Participants will take away samples and a large silk scarf. After the discharge process, participants can choose to overdye their scarves in several dye pots.

Mark Making Patterns with Carrie Burckle Saturday, July 20, 2024 from 11:00 - 4:00

Mark-making in surface design refers to the various techniques and methods used to create marks, patterns, textures, and designs on surfaces, such as fabric and paper. It is an essential aspect of many artistic and design practices, including textile design.

This workshop will focus on using thickened fiber reactive dyes directly on muslin to explore methods of mark-making by printing, stamping, stenciling, painting, and drawing with simple tools. We’ll explore the use of negative space, pattern, texture, movement, color, and the layering of design elements.

All materials are provided. Participants will take away samples of all the processes involved in mark-making.

Ice Dyeing with Tifanie White Saturday, August 17, 2024 from 11:00 - 4:00

Join Tifanie White for a mini masterclass in color and wonder, as you learn the art and science of ice dyeing with fiber reactive dye powders. Tifanie will demonstrate how to create and manipulate dynamic colors on fabric like no other, including her methodology and techniques that she’s created and kept close to the chest— until now. Beyond the science of working with fiber reactive dyes, you’ll also lean into: intuitive color selection, multitasking materials, fearless experimentation, skill refinement, and creative play.

*Materials: all dyestuffs and equipment are included. You will be responsible for bringing your own dyeables (new or used fabric and clothing). Only 100% cellulose fibers (cotton, hemp, linen, rayon) and silk are compatible with our dyestuffs— keep in mind that synthetic fibers will not take color whatsoever. An email will be sent before class with further suggestions, number of pieces/allowable sizes to bring (we will have ample, yet limited workspace for each participant), as well as preparation (scouring) instructions.
