Sculptural Basketry: Exploring Coiling, Twining, and Knotless Netting

"We are collaborating with Craft Contemporary to bring you a series of Basketry Workshops this fall. 'Basketry as Sculpture' is a three-part series of workshops that explore the unique methodologies of creating three-dimensional forms through the methods of knotless netting, coiling, and twining."

Join us for an exhilarating and innovative workshop series that transcends the traditional boundaries of basketry, leading you into the enchanting world of sculptural art. Over the course of three immersive sessions, you'll be guided by acclaimed fiber artists Polly Giacchina, Julie Kornblum, and Elise Vazelakis as you delve into the artistry of coiling, twining, and knotless netting.

Throughout these workshops, you'll have the chance to experiment with an array of materials, including natural fibers and found objects, enabling you to infuse your creations with a distinctive and personal touch. Whether you're a seasoned fiber artist or a complete novice, this series warmly welcomes participants of all skill levels to broaden their artistic horizons.


Sunday, Oct 29, 12:00 - 4:00 Knotless Netting with Polly Jacobs Giacchina

Knotless netting overview: Learn the technique of knotless netting to expand your sculptural possibilities.

Experimentation and creativity: Use both soft materials and wire to experiment with the knotless netting technique to create patterns and textures.

All materials are supplied by the instructor and Craft Contemporary.

Saturday, Nov. 18, 12:00 - 4:00 Coiling Techniques with Julie Kornblum

Introduction to coiling: Learn the basics of coiling as a foundation for creating sculptural forms.

Experimenting with materials: Use a variety of fibers and materials, both natural and found objects, to infuse personality, color, and texture into your creations.

Create Shape and structure: Discover how to manipulate the coiling technique to achieve different shapes and structures in your sculptural basketry.

Saturday, Dec. 16, 12:00 - 4:00 Twining Methods with Elise Vazelakis

Twining fundamentals: Explore the art of twining and how it complements coiling and knotless netting in sculptural

basketry.

This workshop will focus on the intricate art of twining, allowing students to create stunning and functional baskets. Participants will use natural materials, and learn how to harvest, prepare, and weave with an assortment of organic plant materials found in one’s own backyard.

Unleash your creativity while connecting with traditional reed and natural materials.


Participants bring 2 hand towels. All other materials are supplied by Instructor and Craft Contemporary.
