Image transfers are a fun and compelling way to create one-of-a-kind images and mixed media pieces from your photography. Using encaustic wax as the transfer medium, you will learn how to quickly make transfers on a variety of surfaces and explore ways of enhancing your work with other media.

Materials provided:

  • Encaustic wax medium, both clear and white

  • Brushes

  • Pigment sticks, powdered graphite, and pan pastels to play with

  • Gloves

  • Tracing paper, muslin, and cheesecloth substrates

  • Scrapers and carving tools

Materials to bring:

  • A selection of laser prints or photo copies of images that are meaningful to you (laser works best… dye-based ink jet prints will not work). Before the workshop, you will receive a few additional instructions on how to prep the prints.

  • A smock, apron, or old clothes you don’t mind getting wax on.

    Additional optional materials the participants can bring:

Join us for an immersive workshop where you delve into the art of encaustic photo transfer. Discover various techniques for preparing and printing images, and explore the intricacies of transferring them onto different surfaces such as wood, paper, and fabric. Elevate your creations by incorporating pigment sticks or pan-pastels. By the end, you'll gain insights into mounting, storing, and maintaining your exquisite finished pieces. Throughout the session, artist Michelle Robinson will cover essential equipment and safety measures for working with encaustic wax.

About Michelle Michelle Robinson is a multi-disciplinary artist and animator. She studied architecture and visualization at Texas A&M University, and holds an MFA in visual art from New Hampshire Institute of Art. She has had her work published in Diffusion of Light, The Hand, Frames, and Precog. Exhibition highlights include solo shows at the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder, CO, The Wright Gallery at Texas A&M University, and the Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery at Coker University in NC. She was awarded residencies with Kipaipai at the Joshua Tree Center for Photographic Arts in 2022 and with Playa for 2024. She has been on the board of International Encaustic Artists for many years and currently serves as their exhibitions director.
