ARTIST STATEMENT
My art practice explores themes of aliveness, connection, impermanence, mortality and the unknown. The human body is my muse.
BIO
Maria is a Los Angeles-based artist whose practice spans installation, painting, social sculpture, and fiber arts. With a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, her work explores themes of aliveness, connection, impermanence, mortality, and the unknown - with the human body as her enduring muse.
Early projects set the tone: sculpting hundreds of human organs packaged as consumer goods, and conducting a year-long social experiment that turned 365 new friendships into a gallery show. Later, she art-directed GPS data to transform the collective movement of a community into an emergent piece of art. Today, she is deeply engaged in a fiber arts practice.
When she's not in her studio, Maria leads the Creative Entrepreneurship program at ArtCenter College of Design, helping artists and designers make a living doing what they love.
