ARTIST STATEMENT
Elise Vazelakis, a Los Angeles-based textile artist, creates dynamic textiles, sculptures, and installations that delve into the intersection of color, texture, and pattern. Central to Vazelakis' work is the juxtaposition between the resilience of certain materials and the fragility of others, a theme that permeates her artistic exploration. Integrating discarded construction materials with fiber elements, her art occupies a unique space bridging textile and sculpture, pushing the boundaries of her practice. Each series she undertakes is distinctive, characterized by the incorporation of unexpected materials that render each piece both unpredictable and captivating.
Vazelakis' process-oriented approach originated from her early exposure to sewing taught by her grandmothers, evident in the traditional textile techniques infused into her work. While she employs conventional methods such as crocheting, weaving, knitting, and coiling, her art diverges from convention by integrating unconventional materials. Utilizing photographs, metal wire, found objects, and single-use plastic, she infuses her art with an element of unpredictability.
BIO
Elise Vazelakis holds a BS from San Diego State University and an MFA from California State University, Long Beach. Her artistic journey has been marked by solo exhibitions in prominent cities such as Dubai, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, along with participation in group shows across a wide array of locations, including New York, Los Angeles, Austin, Chicago, Toronto, Santa Fe, and Phoenix, among others. Additionally, her work has found its place in both private and public collections, including the esteemed Faisaliah Resort in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
