de boer is pleased to present Arreglos Artificiales, a solo exhibition by Salvador Domínguez. His second solo exhibition with the gallery is energized by feelings and explores themes of love, power, and pride.
Bringing together new paintings, vessels, and a site-specific installation, the exhibition intersects craft, artifice, and cultural memory through the recurring motifs of floral arrangements. At the core of Domínguez’s practice is a sustained engagement with the still life, reimagined through materially hybrid processes. Invoking the legacy of European floral tableaux, Domínguez’s paintings, are built through labor-intensive layering of encaustic and nylon cord on sculpted boards.
Domínguez transforms one room of the gallery into a site-specific installation inspired by the neighborhood florerías that populate much of Southern California and Mexico. Walls saturated in color become the backdrop for an immersive environment in which handwoven vessels constructed from brightly colored pipe cleaners are arranged on custom-made shelves. On another wall, an expansive accumulation of bronze cast and painted objects like rearview mirrors, car fresheners, clothes hangers, and pendants hang on hand-painted beadboard paneling. Together, these forms evoke the dense visual language of the flower shop, a place where commerce, ritual, celebration, and mourning converge, and where displays of abundance become expressions of care and devotion.
