Featuring new and reworked mixed-media sculptures, Juan Manuel Gomez’s solo presentation En Lo Profundo / In the Deep invites viewers to imagine how the physical and symbolic act of deconstruction can help us meet our most challenging and uncertain moments.
The artist presents a collection of sculptures made from materials associated with stability and utilitarianism, such as industrially processed metals and heavy-duty plastics. They suggest environments that offer protection, fortification, and envelopment, while simultaneously reminding us of the precarity of modern life. Drawing on the duality of care and fragility, Gomez’s works propose unconventionally fruitful visions of the refuge found in creative acts that are necessary for survival in an increasingly hard climate.
