Intro to Darning and Patching

  • Textile Artifacts 4558 West Washington Boulevard Los Angeles, CA, 90016 United States (map)

This workshop, taught by Lorenza Lattanzi, focuses on two practical mending skills to help you extend the life of your textiles: darning & patching. These methods can be applied to antique, vintage, or new home textiles, clothing, upholstery, toweling - any cloth that needs attention and care. Darning is the focus of Saturday’s workshop and Patching is Sunday’s.

Repair is a thoughtful and meditative practice that can restore function while adding beauty to the textiles we love, use, and admire. We will cover the techniques, tools, and provide an understanding of how material weight, fiber content, and structural considerations influence the overall look and feel of your mend.

We'll look at repair examples pulled from the Textile Artifacts collection, from patches on worn-through blankets to invisible mends on sheer curtains. This deep-dive into the collection will demonstrate how appropriate repairs can keep your fabrics in beautiful use for a lifetime.

Extra collective workspace time each day until 6pm.
