Community Cloth is a collective quilt project aiming to map both our personal and collective experiences with healing, community, and collective care. Throughout history quilts have been sites of communal care, made in intimate moments between textile artists and required to hold the stories they’ve told, both joyful and sad, during quilting bees and meetings. The nature of quilts, who makes them, and the materials that are used, hold a sense of communal care, resistance, and resilience. What better way to reconcile the experiences we each have held, than to translate them through a variety of textile methods and share them in a collectively crafted quilt?
The final quilt will be made from individually sewn 10”x10” textile squares collected over a month. The squares will be collected and sewn together into a larger quilt for a showing at the end of September 2021. Both experienced and beginning textile artists are invited to contribute a 10” x 10” textile square using embroidery, quilting, hand sewing, mending, dying, painting, fabric collage, and other textile creation methods.
