Petra Blaisse & the Mingei Curtain

  • Mingei Museum 1439 El Prado San Diego, CA, 92101 United States (map)

We’ve been a fan of Petra Blaisse’s work for years . . . thrilled to see her involvement with the Mingei’s transformation. Obviously the curtain will be up indefinitely - it is part of the museum’s “architecture.” We used Sept 30 as an end date for our own LATM calendar!

”Over the last 30 years, Petra Blaisse and her team at Inside Outside have specialized in textile, exhibition and landscape design and interior architecture working internationally on projects of sophistication and scale. Blaisse’s work and creativity can be found across a broad range of institutions, such as Casa da Música in Porto, Portugal, the Harvard Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and soon, Mingei International Museum.

For the Museum’s transformation, Blaisse was commissioned to create a custom, large-scale curtain for the new 120-seat Theater. Inspired by San Diego's beloved jacaranda trees, Blaisse’s curtain will live in this space as both a beautiful work of art and highly functional element, allowing for flexibility in acoustics, light and aesthetics within the Theater.

“Our interest lies in the creations of dynamic, site-specific environments, both inside and outside, with preferably, a link between the two. To us, interdisciplinary collaboration and clear communication are key. We want to contribute to a larger whole.”
