Katherine Tucker of Desert Churros Roving Ranch has invited Textile Arts LA members to visit her sheep ranch!
Katherine has asked us to adapt our plan: Because her attention would be distracted on shearing day, Katherine has instead asked us to come up and visit with her sheep, then spend our time with her on a studio tour. We'll have some hands-on time with shorn fleece. Our conversation can meander through the transformation of shorn fleece into ready-to-work yarn, natural dyeing, ranch business, and more. Her ranch is about 80 minutes north of LA. Her flock is about 20 sheep strong.
NOTE: Katherine has decided to prepare lunch, so no BYOB sack lunch required! We can also arrange informal "unsanctioned" carpools. Please let us know in your checkout notes or email us at lesley@textileartsla.org if you're interested. We'll send everyone an address and directions the week of the tour. Looking forward to seeing sheep!
From Katherine's bio " In my spare time I enjoy raising Navajo Churro sheep for their wool. My flock is well cared for and their wool is carefully processed into Pin Draft roving - ready for spinning into yarn. Navajo Churro Sheep wool is used by the Navajo Indians for their rugs and blankets. Recently I added a chocolate colored ram to my flock and now have 20 beautiful sheep - 5 handsome rams and 15 beautiful ewes. My sheep are all pampered. They are guarded by a duo of Great Pyrenees /Akbash mix guardian dogs named Sheba and Columbo!!
