Getty's African American Art History Initiative

From the Getty Research Institute:

One of the many outcomes of the civil rights movement was the serious academic study of art of the African Diaspora, including by African American artists.

The Getty Research Institute recently launched an initiative committed to collecting materials related to this field, and so far has acquired artist Betye Saar's archive and worked alongside four other institutions to acquire the Johnson Publishing Company archive, a trove that includes more than 4.8 million Ebony and Jetmagazine images. In Getty's latest Art + Ideas podcast, LeRonn Brooks, associate curator at the Getty Research Institute, and Kellie Jones, Columbia University professor and senior consultant on the initiative, discuss the urgency of preserving critical archival materials.
