Folded Landscapes: Studio Tour and Paper Workshop

  • Culver City Arts District (map)

The work of Los Angeles-based architect and artist Jeff Morrical incorporates single sheet paper sculptures shaped by folds and gravity. Inspired by his background in architecture, Jeff is driven to find form, structure, and pattern in everyday materials. He uses drafting software to design 2-dimensional patterns and graphics on large custom sheets of paper that correspond with the 3-dimensional forms created through the folding process. This synthesis of patterns and folds results in light and whimsical paper forms that take on a life of their own.

In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to learn the Miura folding pattern and apply the process to making their own ‘globe’ – a small freestanding table sculpture that rotates freely with the air around it. Attendees will then use a variety of painterly techniques to create their own abstract landscapes and maps upon their globe. This workshop is appropriate for all skill levels.

Materials will be supplied including paper, paints, woodblock base and mounting materials. Material fee of $25 due to instructor at the class.

Workshop is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the artist's studio-home in the Culver City Arts District. Address will be sent a few days before the event.
