ARTIST STATEMENT
I am an artist making large scale quilted textile art.
I am inspired by urban living, architecture, museum visits, maps, and adventures into natural surroundings. I photograph interesting and unusual shapes and sketch designs in my physical and digital sketchbooks.
I create quilts by freehand cutting lines and shapes from solid fabrics, and arranging them on my 8’x14’ design wall until I have a complex and compelling design. Engineering the construction of my quilt takes planning so that each seam line becomes an important and deliberate part of the drawing I’m creating in fabric.
I use bold colors, supported by a full range of light and dark values to add depth. My stitched seam lines incorporate figure/ground tension so that the background is as important as the figure in the design.
After piecing the quilt top together on my sewing machine, I layer it with wool and cotton batting and backing fabric and stitch through all the layers to add additional texture.
My professional and educational background in engineering, technology, and cybersecurity trained my brain to be curious, absorb information through diffuse awareness, and assimilate disparate facts and images into a cohesive vision. My goal is to make beautiful art following good design principles, and I often incorporate a deeper meaning from social justice or environmental concerns.
