SATURDAY and SUNDAY, JULY 24-25th 10:00 - 4:00 P.M.
PRINT, MAKE, WEAR, UPCYCLE
In this workshop you will explore and produce prints using textile inks and screens on your own fabrics, table linens, pillow cushions, or clothing. This workshop originated in a conversation about printing our own fabrics for clothing: summer dresses, tunics, overalls and jumpsuits. The beauty of our pop-up studio and teaching style is that you can interpret our concept however you like! All you have to do is come prepared with pre-washed fabric, precut garment patterns from your own stash/collection, or simple constructed pieces of clothing, table linens, or home goods that need a fresh new look.
You will engage in design ideas using your imagination and personal design resources from artwork, photos, ephemera, books etc. Create your own unique prints on garment pattern pieces, or print on pre-bought fabric blanks, table linens or give a beloved piece of clothing or item a new life.
On Saturday we will walk through:
Introduction: preparation and demo to materials and screen printing
Ideation, designing stencils, preparing screens, mixing inks
Exploration and learning: exploring your design and mark making potential
Before you print on your own fabrics there will be time for exploration of color and design elements
Test your colors and screens on provided muslin
Then Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday we'll get into the Printing Groove: the remainder of the workshop is devoted to your own screen printing experimentation. This is when you'll take out your own fabric pieces and begin final printing.

All of the textile inks and screens are purchased in Downtown LA at Rheetech.
If you would like to purchase your own screens, please choose 110 mesh count. Some standard sizes are available "off the rack," or screens can be custom made to your preferred size and profile (the depth of the frame can be ½ inch, 1 inch to regular). Rheetech has a super helpful staff and can answer your questions.
You can also mail your design in a pdf or jpeg file to the owner Brian Rhee and he will apply your design to a screen, by dressing it with photo emulsion and exposing the design on the screen. Allow at least 1 week for this process. Rheetech charges a nominal fee for the screens and photo emulsion application but more for the stencil transparency.
