Transform leaves, flowers, and foraged plants into richly layered botanical prints in this hands-on eco-printing workshop with TALA member Caitlin Parker. Working with fresh and dried plant materials, participants will learn how to transfer natural dyes onto silk through guided demonstrations in fabric preparation, bundling, steaming, and unveiling, revealing one-of-a-kind patterns and colors shaped by the natural world.
Throughout the afternoon, Parker will share techniques for natural dyeing, discuss which plants yield the most vibrant and dynamic results, and offer insight into how eco-printing can become an accessible creative practice using materials gathered from gardens, neighborhoods, and everyday landscapes. Participants will also learn how to make a simple ink from locally foraged oak galls and experiment with drawing and mark-making on paper while the scarves steam. All materials will be provided, including silk scarves and fresh and dried plants from the instructor’s garden. Each participant will leave with a hand-dyed silk scarf, as well as detailed instructions and resources for continuing an eco-printing practice at home.
Presented in partnership with Textile Arts LA, this workshop draws inspiration from the Fowler Museum’s celebrated textile collection and current rotation highlighting women’s artistry. Open to all skill levels, the class offers an opportunity to connect art, ecology, sustainability, and craft through natural materials and shared creative exploration.
Light refreshments will be provided, with a short break midway through the workshop.
