Designed with a focus on sustainable practices, this workshop with Svetlana Shigroff will teach participants how to transform post-industrial fashion waste into functional and decorative loop-pile tapestries.
Participants will begin with an introduction to Svetlana’s textile art practice and her use of reclaimed materials in creative applications. The hands-on portion of the workshop focuses on the core techniques of hand tufting, including:
- Safe operation of tufting tools and equipment.
- Preparation and use of repurposed fabric yardage and textiles.
- Completion of a sample loop-pile tapestry, exploring texture, design, and practical applications.
Students will also discuss how tufting techniques can be integrated into their own creative practices. Bringing personal fabric scraps or yardage is encouraged to make the work more individualized and make good use of that fabric stash!
This workshop highlights the importance of sustainability in art-making by addressing the waste generated by the fashion industry. Participants will learn how to reimagine discarded materials as valuable resources, reducing environmental impact while creating unique artworks.
No prior experience with tufting is required.
