THIS IS NOW A ONE-DAY CLASS HOSTED AT FERNE’S STUDIO IN ECHO PARK/ SILVER LAKE. Enrollment will be $150 and payable directly to Ferne the morning of the class.
Earlier this year we were thrilled to have an opportunity to invite the phenomenal artist Ferne Jacobs to share her coiling technique with a small group of students. She is back again this Fall with an exploration of twining and knotting.
Knotting and twining are techniques, like coiling, that you can do off the loom in fiber. They both take a warp, which makes them different than coiling. The knotting uses macrame techniques in a more art fashion, and twining is a technique that is done on a loom, but you can also do it in your lap. Knotting creates a hard structure, while twining creates a softer one. Beyond focusing solely on the practical steps, this workshop will encourage individual expression and discussions about creativity and inspiration.
Ed note: I attended the Coiling Workshop this spring, and will say that the conversations about art and the art process and the parallels to how we create our lives, and how we build a relationship with ourselves through art, were special. I was also struck by the individuality of the students’ work and process: the breadth of responses as each student began to master the technique and then wandered down their own paths of form-making. The workshop truly was a treat – we hope you’ll join us for this next session!
Ferne Jacobs' work is in the collections of the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and others. She has lectured and taught widely throughout the United States and has a particular interest in helping students to not only learn the techniques involved, but also to identify and explore their own creative interests.
**NEW** Ferne will be hosting the workshop at her home studio in the Echo Park / Silver Lake area. Ferne will email the address to all confirmed students.
