Journey Through an Empty Circle

  • Roswell Space 3050 Roswell Street Los Angeles, CA, 90065 United States (map)

Cindy Rinne and Marthe Aponte are featured in Journey Through an Empty Circle at Roswell Space from May 7 – June 4 2023. This exhibition of new work was inspired by the lecture Line, Circle, and Space at Art Now and Zen, Japan House, LA.

The concepts of fullness/emptiness and void/form are explored through textural wall-works. According to the Zen Buddhist concept of Enso or empty circle, you cannot have form without formlessness and vice versa. Aponte and Rinne layer and combine materials using picote and fiber art. They create a mini pilgrimage with the empty circle as a symbol of everyone’s journey. Forms such as flowers, rivers, animals, and more are a symbolic boat/frame used to bring attention to the emptiness. With the awareness of that paradox, we return to the dusty world with a new perspective, a rebirth each day and a cycle of seasons.
