Rugs have a long history of duality, of being both fine art and useful. As insulation hanging upon drafty castle walls, rugs simultaneously depict origin stories, or serve as mattresses for nomadic tribes whilst bearing witness to seasons and important events. Many interior designers prefer to begin with the rug when designing a room. The textile laid upon the floor anchors and mobilizes space, creating the entire atmosphere with a sort of humility. The art is on the ground, to be walked on, to be laid on, to be touched. It wears down, shows signs of tread, is sometimes coveted stylistically for its age: often passing through generations like close members of a household. Textiles are an intimate art, originating out of necessity and excess wool; made out of what sheep herders had: various fibers hand knotted to tell a story. Life and art are incalculably unified, with perhaps greater capacities for shared or collective experiences, and reversely, unusual tension.
