New date to be announced in the Fall.
Combination & Innovation/Transformation & Renovation, an artist talk with Casey Baden & Minga Opazo, moderated by Emily B. Jones
LA-based artist Casey Baden and Minga Opazo have recently joined forces in a curatorial initiative and developing fiber practice Textile Resource LA. After working alongside each other through an MFA program at Calarts since 2018 and simultaneously developing their studio and textile practices, they decided to make their collaboration official.
Currently at the forefront of Baden’s practice are the ideas of Combination and Innovation. Her studio is a mess of materials – weavings, paintings, photographs, notes, fabrics – waiting to be combined and collaged into new large-scale works. Outside of the studio, innovation is central, as she pursues entrepreneurship with TRLA and her arts fabrication business, Full Service Creative.
Similarly for Opazo, Transformation and Renovation have taken the fore. In the studio she is developing techniques to transform textile waste into layered and colorful sculptures, and to transform the sculptures from art objects to compost with the assistance of a fiber-eating mushroom. Continuing her commitment to sustainability, she is also consumed with the renovation and building of a tiny home, where she will be living full time in the fall of 2021. Together they invite you for an artist talk in Opazo’s Ventura backyard to elaborate on these topics, delve deeper into their studio practices, and to discuss the multi-dimensional roles they hope to play in their art community.
