E-Textiles that can Alter Your Mental State - Article in Popular Mechanics

Popular Mechanics recently published an article featuring e-textiles that incorporate vibration patterns. Testing the hypothesis that clothing can alter one’s perception of one’s body, two prototypes were created to use different motor combinations for the vibrations.

One experiment tested participants’ arms, center of the back and the upper back. Patterns that started in the center of the back and moved outward, created different sensations that wearers likened to being in a body of water with waves forming around them. Patterns that outward and moved inward caused participants to feel rigid and anxious. Other tests provided sensations similar to water, fluffy clods and polished rocks.
