Upcoming Exhibition by Neri Oxman: Material Ecology at MoMA

Material Ecology, an upcoming exhibition at MoMA (opening May 14 online at moma.org), features new work by Neri Oxman. Oxman is a professor of media arts and sciences at MIT’s Media Lab, and has founded/directs the Mediated Matter Group. The exhibition focuses on how her techniques and objects are informed by and engage with the structures, systems and aesthetics of nature.

Oxman integrates 3-D printing techniques with in-depth research of natural phenomena and behaviors. She has coined the term “material ecology,” which operates at the intersection of biology, engineering, materials science, and computer science.

Seven projects in the exhibition are “demos” for a library of materials and processes that might someday be available to all architects and designers. Each structure is designed as if grown, with no assembly required. Pictured above is her Silk Pavilion.
