UC Berkeley Art Museum receives new collection of African American quilting

UC Berkeley Art Museum was recently gifted the world’s largest collection of quilts (and all created by African American women), with over 3,000 different pieces. This collection includes quilts going back to early 20th century, including some made by women who were born into slavery. Many quilts came from the Bay Area, along with the Midwest and other parts of the U.S.

There is a solo exhibition of work by Rosie Lee Tompkins planned for BAMPFA, which will include the artist’s 500 quilts created over 80 years.

More information about this exciting acquisition can be found here.
