The Synthetic Proposition Book Launch at CSULB

The University Art Museum at CSU Long Beach is hosting a Book Launch for The Synthetic Proposition: Conceptualism and the Political Referent, with author Nizan Shaked and artist Mary Kelly.

The book examines the impact of the Civil Rights, Black Power, feminist and sexual-liberty movements on conceptualism in the U.S. between the late 1960s - 1990s. It discusses how the impact of these identity-based communities spread, offering case-studies of Adrian Piper, David Hammons, Renée Green, Mary Kelly, Martha Rosler, Silvia Kolbowski, Daniel Joseph Martinez, Lorna Simpson, Hans Haacke, Andrea Fraser and Charles Gaines. Through the lens of social issues, these artists analyze conventions of language, photography, moving image, installation, and display.
