BIO

Ms. Allen has an MFA degree from The Claremont Graduate University and a BFA degree from Otis/Parsons Art Institute. Currently she is a Fine Arts professor for Copper Mountain College in Joshua Tree, CA. Her artistic practice has spanned more than twenty-five years and includes a variety of traditional and nontraditional artistic processes and media for methods of expression. Though primarily a mixed-media assemblage sculptor, site-specific installations, earthworks, altered books, experimental sound and performance art have been produced. The art work has been displayed in galleries and venues in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Joshua Tree, and Palm Springs. It is privately owned regionally and internationally.

PROJECT NOTES

“I am creating multiple (16-20) cube-like structures that measure approximately 2 x 2 x 2 feet. They are constructed with mixed-media pieces that are “linear” metal and plastic remnants repurposed for the project. Mediums include plastic tubing, metal pipes, strips of flashing, paint brushes, shelving supports, etc. These items are collected from the Mojave Desert’s open spaces and specifically scavenged from illegal dump sites. The individual boxes are intended to be stacked and arranged site-specific to the Makerville location.

ARTIST STATEMENT – 2018

The quiet open spaces of the Mojave Desert inspire the work formally and thematically. Most of the assembled works reference the human physical form, either by visually resembling traditional figurative sculpture or by engaging the viewer with an interactive physical experience. The mixed-media objects included in the sculptures and site-specific installations are found and scavenged materials and selected because of their history as a functional item in relationship to humans. Concepts of fragility, transience, and ephemerality are considered through the application of aged materials. While new objects are occasionally included, the elements of rust, decay, and weathering are celebrated and appropriated as visual metaphors.
